A farmer tends to citrus trees in a lush green grove under overcast skies in Kintamani

Kintamani Farmers

November 2023. The Kintamani region in Bali is inhabited by the Bali Aga, the island's original ethnic minority. Most are Hindus who hold fast to the Tri Hita Karana philosophy — three causes of happiness — based on good relationships with the gods, other people and the environment. Land use here is divided between residential, agricultural and forest zones. The agricultural area is the largest: rainfed farms and rice fields, Bali Arabica coffee grown under shade trees, citrus groves, chillies, yams and sweet potatoes. Here is the result of wandering through the mountains and around Lake Danau Batur.
